WINTER X GAMES – DAY 2 RECAP

It was a busy Friday in Aspen, with many events set as qualifiers for the weekend, and new this year, more events going down in the evening. Riders didn’t seem to have any issues adjusting to competing under the lights.

Womens superpipe went down, and as all bets would indicate, Kelly Clark absolutely dominated the field. Despite hard charging from the likes of Gretchen Bleiler, Hannah Teter, and Torah Bright, Clark has the amplitude and the 1080 that will keep her on top of the podium. Bright, who has been out of competition for some time struggled to set down her run, which could always push for contention. Finals were Clark, Hight, and Teter as a 1,2,3. But a shout out must go to Kaitlyn Farrington, who had a few scrubs, but was certainly charging to put together a run that would have been keeping the podium up in the air.

Clark’s Run:

In women’s slopestyle Jamie Anderson completely dominated. Cab 7 to Cab bs 5 to bs 5 to cab 180. Clean as hell and with style. Anderson’s score was miles above the rest of the field. Fans of Buaas, but her run of a 3 to a 3 to a straight setup to a bs 180? O’Brien could be on that podium, and it would always be interesting to see if Pelosi, Roy, or Kimura were invited to the games. But all the credit should go to Jamie Anderson, who continues to earn her spot on the podium.

Here is Anderson, dominating.

Oh, and the night mens big air took place. Nothing special, just a massive step up gap that most riders wouldn’t be able to straight air over, a run in that consisted of riders pinning the entire park to clear, and the first ever triple 14s thrown in competition. Backside Triple Cork Mute 1440; thank you Mark McMorris. Despite Horgmo’s pretty much perfect triple stomp, it was McMorris taking the win, with Torstein in second and Seb Toots in third. This big air was crazy. Any rider that wasn’t throwing at least doubles was given a polite ‘golf clap’ thanks for showing up. And it was evident from the start that a triple cork would be taking home the gold.

Speaking of this 1,2,3 podium, it should be noted that in yesterday’s slopestyle eliminations, these were the exact same top qualifiers. Stay tuned for updates on the finals. Interestingly, top ranked Chas Guldemond didn’t make the finals. And White is holding out for pipe.

Congrats McMorris:
