World Record Summit : The Action Recon Interview with founders “Andy Dylan” and “Scott Moore”

WRS founders Scott Moore and Andy Dylan.

A few months back I had the pleasure to sit down with the two men who are behind World Record Summit, which is an event and organization that is going to change the face of Action Sports as we know it today. World Records are things that have fascinated humans since the dawn of time and Action Sports is a genre that desperately needs an outlet to showcase and unify the practice of setting and breaking new records. Recently we have seen snowboarder Mark McMorris land the first ever back side 1440 triple cork, we have seen BMX pro Andy Buckworth land the first ever no handed double front flip and FMX rider Mark Monea land the first ever front flip 360. Now lets imagine if all these amazing feats were combined into one event along with music, celebrity appearances and numerous other records in various other Action Sports disciplines. Imagine is exactly what Andy Dylan and Scott Moore did and they have now brought this to a reality. So get informed and find out what the World Record Summit is all about and watch this movement change Action Sports in a big way.

1) Lets start things off with both Andy and Scott giving the people out there a little personal background information on themselves and how they came to end up doing business together in Los Angeles.

Andy Dylan : My name is Andy Dylan and have been a stunt man for the last 15 years and a stunt coordinator for the last few years. I was actually a high diver in college and worked as a stunt diver at Sea World and Universal Studios and I got my first movie gig as a stunt man in Spider Man 2 and actually just finished work on the new Pirates Of The Caribbean. That love of heights and pushing your body to the limit was what attracted me to Action Sports and kind of how we came up with the initial concept for The World Record Summit.

Scott Moore : Hi, Scott Moore here. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and have been an entertainment attorney here in LA for the last 12 years. Dylan and I met on a trip to Thailand about five years ago, we have been working together on the World Record Summit idea and other things for the last three years.

2) Can you guys tell us what exactly World Record Summit entails? How is it going to play out?

AD: Just a brief quick overview of how it came to us is that a lot of action sports athletes were doing stunt work in movies and I started running into a lot of them who really wanted to become stunt men. After a few years of speaking to a lot of these guys there was always this trend in the conversation leading towards world records and where could you go just to talk about or attempt world records on a grand scale. So Scott and I got to talking about these athletes and not only them being elite competitors in their sports, but also their showman ship and the records that they wanted to break. The more we talked about the idea the more we thought about throwing it back to the days of Evil Knievel and the idea of having a host, music, celebrities, an awards show and blending that with the Action Sports genre. We thought this would be something that a lot of these athletes would really latch onto. We basically wanted to give the athlete the opportunity to show the fan what goes into setting up a world record attempt and by doing that engage the fan with the athlete in order to get people talking. Between my contacts and Scott’s contacts we reached out to athletes like Robbie Maddison who to us is the epitome of a World Record Summit member, and we built a brand and an event around those athletes.

SM: Robbie is todays Evil Kenevil.

AD: To have guys on board like Robbie and Jake Brown and have them telling us this needs to exist is what really legitimized it to us. When you have athletes like that telling other people that they love the concept that’s when the idea takes off and that’s when it turns into a reality.

SM: It is important to point out that our brand starts and ends with the athlete and then we add in certain elements along the way to build on the that brand, like music and celebrities. That then allows us to provide the interaction between the brand and the fans from a live standpoint and a viral standpoint as well. We give the athlete the ability to conceive, design and execute and the fan the chance to be part of the whole process and there is really no other platform like it out there at the moment.

Imagine an entire event based around stunts like this in various different disciplines? Amazing.

3) So what sports is The World Record Summit going to focus on, or are you trying to cover all Action Sports?

SM: Well I don’t think we are too limited as long as it qualifies as to what an Action Sports would be. We are somewhat limited from a production standpoint where we may not be able to fit it into the confines of our venue, but things like Motocross, BMX, Snowboarding, Snowmobiling, Skateboarding are probably our main disciplines, but if we can figure something else out we won’t stay only limited to those.

AD: The WRS can also work in two ways. We can have our own events, but if there is something else happening at another location we can cover that as well and include that into our world record book. That is where the whole idea becomes limitless and can operate outside of a certain given event. It is also where we can interact with the fans and ask them what they want to see, what records they want broken and that is the end interaction we are looking for between the fans and the “Summit Members”.

4) So what exactly are “Summit Members”?

SM: A Summit member is basically someone who is a pioneer of their sport. Someone who has constantly pushed the boundaries and always breaks new ground. Danny Way would be a perfect example of this in skateboarding or Robbie Maddison in FMX. Someone who is currently or has held a world record in their discipline, someone who has the creativity and ingenuity to come up with something that has never been done before in their discipline. Then with that, as our elite fraternity of members grows so does our ability to become the place where world records happen and are seen as legitimate.

AD: On our website that launched today the athletes that are Summit Members will be on there and their records will always be on there. It will act like a back catalogue of records and also highlight athletes that are getting ready to break new records and do new things at certain events. Once you become a Summit Member you will always be part of this thing for life.

Events like the one below need proper outlets to take them worldwide and the WRS is going to be able to supply this.

5) So how does the WRS fit in with things like X-Games, Dew Tour or The Maloof Money Cup? This is another Action Sports event how are you going to set yourself apart from the pack?

AD: I think that in general it does not compete against those events and stands out from those events because its a whole different animal. The fact that we are lumping entertainment on there as well with musical acts and celebrity hosts really makes the event more of an entertainment project as opposed to just a competition. At the end of the day what we would love to see one of our athletes at the X-Games stand up on the podium and say you know I got the gold medal, now I want to break a world record and it’s going to happen at the WRS.

SM: I think the simple difference is we are looking to become that super bowl of Action Sports. Where we make all of these other competitions part of it while we are there attending. Like at this years Winter X-Games we saw Torstein Horgmo land the first triple cork in competition, we would like to include that into the WRS website and feature that accomplishment. Also during our own events we might feature a big name band and fans of that band will tune in and also get to see Robbie Maddison break some sort of record and then that just increases his fan base and so on. That type of interaction and that type of diversification is where we really differ.

One of the most unique things about us is that we have a viral contest called “Sickest Trick Contest” and it features non professional athletes who are given a chance to showcase their talent and they can get voted into a main event WRS or we can go out and cover them as well. Our Summit athletes will actually watch the videos and select who they think had the sickest trick.

6) Will the WRS be a made for TV event or is the whole live feel of this event just as important?

AD: The live event is just as important. Its web based right up until the live event and then we are expecting 15 000 fans for the live event along with Pay Per View sales as well. So we launch web, viral and then our first live event will be the ultimate launch of the brand and we want the live experience to be just as amazing.

7) So what kind of influence do you think WRS will have on the progression in Action Sports?

SM: We want it to work in the way where you might go to X-Games to win gold and be great on that day or at that time, but you will come to WRS to be great forever. We want athletes to perfect their skills in X-Games, or on the Dew Tour and then come to WRS to really raise the bar or set their name in stone. We are giving the athletes the ability to test their skills without any limit, WRS will be the place where you can conceive, design and execute your feat in a festival style event.

AD: WRS is going to really drive that talent and progression element and make athletes really want to push their respective sports higher then they already are. We want encourage new things, like what Robbie did when he jumped onto the Arc De Triomphe in Vegas. We don’t want people coming out and breaking records by two feet we want to encourage imagination and new levels of thinking.

8 Who are your initial Summit members? Who are the guys who are kicking off this brand?

SM: Our initial Summit Members are Paul Thacker, Jake Brown and Robbie Maddison. Our host who will be handling the live event is Jason Ellis and he will be working with Lauren Abraham. We can’t disclose what the first world record will be, but we can tell you that it will be a Moto event and it will breaking somebody’s current record.

Robbie Maddison (FMX).

Jake Brown. (Skate)

Paul Thacker. (Sled)

Jason Ellis. (host)

Lauren Abraham. (correspondent)

9) How is the WRS going to differ from something like the Guinness Book Of Records?

DK: We are not trying to be in competition with Guinness all we are saying is that there is a small two page section in that book that pertains to Action Sports and we are here to give it the attention that it really deserves.

SM: Also Guinness book is corporate, they are not athletes spearheading the initiative to create new records and new ideas in Action Sports.

So there you have it folks. The lowdown on the WRS and what to expect from this amazing event, be sure to check out their website for all updates, event times and information. Thanks to Andy Dylan and Scott Moore for the interview and Action Recon will see you all at the first event.
