R.I.P Sarah Burke – 29 Year Old Ski Legend and Pioneer

January 19, 2012

It is with great sadness that we just received news that Canadian Freestyle Skier, X Games Gold Medallist, and Olympic pioneer and hopeful Sarah Burke has passed away. All of us at Action Recon extend our sincere condolences to all of Sarah’s family, friends, and fans.

Burke, 29, suffered a crash Jan 10th while training in the Park City, Utah halfpipe, and has since been in critical condition. Burke is originally from Midland, Ontario, and more recently Whistler and Squamish, B.C.

Burke has been a freestyle skiing pioneer, going back to her days filming with Helly Hansen’s “Happy Happy” and more recently with her X Games gold from last season. Her X Games 2011 Gold Medal run is posted below. Sarah was a progressive and hard-charging skier, a four-time Winter X Games Champion, but also was monumental as a lobbyist to have skiing half pipe included in the Sochi winter Olympyics in 2014, for which she was a top contender.

Just days after her crash, Gretchen Bleiler, who would be the snowboard version of Burke, leading the charge in the snowboard pipe world, wrote this touching article reflecting on Sarah and her accident:

Again, all of us at Action Recon wish our deepest condolences to Sarah’s family and friends.
