Madchild : Little Monster EP : The Action Recon Review

Madchild has without a doubt always been one of my favorite MC’s. His voice is recognizable right off the bat, his rhymes are both aggressive, amusing and creative and he has more tales to tell than most people ever will. Between mixtapes, Swollen Members albums and EP’s he has been making a lot of noise as of late, which is something that we welcome. His latest EP “Little Monster” is a introspective offering that has Madchild exercising demons, spitting fire on the mic and backing it with groove laden beats all the way through.

Both singles that were dropped via videos “Sh*t Talker” and Fu*K MadChild” are great examples of what you will find on this six song EP, but there is still plenty more music to experience beyond those two tracks. Personal favorite track off the album was the slower and lyrically deeper “Wanted”. Madchild takes you through the rise and fall of his career, his fall into drug abuse, depression and the hard road back from those vices. He is honest with himself and creates a sense of urgency to get back on top and do things right this time. The music in the song is melancholic and sets the mood perfectly.

The EP as a whole has a real funk groove to the music, it makes you want to move. The bass line on closing song “I’m Ok” makes it hard for anyone to keep their head from nodding and musically “Little Monster” is not nearly as dark as a lot of the Swollen Members music. That groove set to the smart assed commentary of Madchild is one of the main things that keeps me coming back to this album over and over.

The EP definitely skims the surface of the Swollen Members sound on the track “Black Acid Devil”, but Madchild also has enough of his own style and flare to make a solo record that can easily exist outside the Swollen name. Fact is Madchild is a phenomenal rapper who still has a great deal of creative years ahead of him and its nice to see he has cleared his head and made good use of that talent.

“Little Monster” is available on iTunes now and not a record any hip hop cat should be without.
