Goatwhore : Blood For The Master : The Action Recon Review

On February 14th, 2012 black/thrash metal beasts Goatwhore will be dropping their new album “Blood For The Master” and a better way to celebrate Valentines day we can not think of. “Blood For The Master” is the follow up album to the critically acclaimed “Carving Out The Eyes Of God” and the boys took on this task with a vengeance. The album kicks off immediately with the aggression and thrashing goodness that we have come to expect from Goatwhore. The first track on the album “Collapse In Eternal Worth” is a brilliant opener and really sets a tone with its punishing speed and outright blazing black metal feel. However, it’s the second track “When Steel And Bone Meet” that really sucks the listener in and drives the point home that this is a true metal album filled with all the best aspects of the various different metal genres that Goatwhore draw from.

The raw intensity of this album is what makes it a real masterpiece, the band never stray far from the path which is one of the best things about Goatwhore. On “Blood For The Master” they have truly perfected their sound and the art of writing incredible metal riffs. The band flirts with new sounds briefly on tracks like “In Deathless Tradition” where they actually bring some death metal elements to the music, but these brief moments are done very well and add to the brutality of the album. Another thing you will notice on this album are a few more guitar solos from Sammy Duet and they are a welcome addition to the Goatwhore sound. On tracks like “When Steel And Bone Meet”, “Embodiment Of This Bitter Chaos” and “An End To Nothing” Sammy shreds like we have not heard him before and it adds a great deal of depth and authenticity to the whole experience of the album.

Another aspect of this album that we thoroughly enjoyed was the vocal offering from front man Ben Falgoust. He has always had the perfect snarl that ventured back and forth from black and thrash metal, but he seems to use a little more diversity in his voice on “Blood For The Master”. Ben really explores the deeper side of his voice during certain parts of this record and it adds a great deal of power to the music. His growl at the opening of “In Deathless Tradition” puts him right up there with the death metal elite in terms of skill and outright monstrous tone.

Any good band eventually puts out an album that seems to be the point where they are functioning like a perfectly oiled machine. For Goatwhore we feel “Blood For The Master” is that album, their formal is perfect, the entire album is tight, there is not one second of filler and the production quality is top notch. Goatwhore have been working with Erik Rutan of Hate Eternal for the last few albums, but its very evident that the band and Erik have truly connected on another level with this record.

“Blood For The Master” will hit the streets and iTunes on February 14th, 2012 and simply put you would have to be out of your mind not to buy this record. Next week Action Recon will be dropping our interview we did with Goatwhore front man Ben Falgoust. You will be able to hear first hand about the writing, recording, inspiration and what the band was trying to accomplish with the new album. Be sure to check back for that and in the meantime enjoy a new Goatwhore track.
