Dj muggs vs. ill bill : kill devil hills : review
I have been looking forward to reviewing this album ever since I heard it was in the works. It was the kind of album that the second I caught wind that it was going down I knew we were in for a classic. Probably my favorite thing about this album is its not what I had expected it to sound like. This album is raw and not too produced, its dark, but not in the way I was thinking it was going to be. When I first heard about the album I was expecting something in between Temples Of Boom and Ill Bill’s The Hour of Reprisal and while there are moments where one might be able to make this comparison, like on Amputated Saint, it is not the over all feel of the album.
There is a lot of variety on this album and I think that comes from the duo of DJ Muggs and Ill Bill along with many of the guest appearances on Kill Devil Hills as well. With guys like B-Real, Vinnie Paz, Sick Jacken, Raekwon, Q-Unique, Everlast and Slaine there is a lot of talent and different styles to draw from and that is what really spreads this album across the board as far as sound, lyrics and feel. Another great thing about Kill Devil Hills is that it actually sounds different than everything else that has come out lately, it stands on its own and offers up a much more original sound. The number one thing that makes this album pop is the chemistry between DJ Muggs and Ill Bill, it is easy to hear that these two work together very well and you get the feeling that they had been working together for years prior to this album. Perhaps it is similar musical tastes, similar flow or mindset, but this record sounds like the work of a seasoned team rather then a first time album collaboration.

Ill Bill
Lyrically the album blends the street with politics perfectly. There is enough back up on the tough guy front, just like there is much evidence that Bill could carry on an intelligent conversation about many of the highly political and controversial viewpoints that are expressed. That right there is a beautiful thing as I am sick of hearing MC’s that sound like they are reading of a conspiracy theorist website for most of their records. Kill Devil Hills is an amazing blend of talent and passion and will be on heavy rotation in my player for some time to come. Be sure to buy it on iTunes now or at your local record store and help support real hip hop.
